How A CDN Works

A Content Delivery Network (CDN) is all about making a website load faster for all users, wherever they are in the world. This is done by storing (caching) copies of your website on servers at the network edge. For example, if your website is hosted at a UK data centre, there might be a delay if you try to access that site from the USA. So a copy of your website is stored on a server closer to the user, called a Point of Presence (POP).

Multiple copies of your site’s data is stored at different POPs throughout the world, so your site will load faster in remote places. Your users will navigate your site more efficiently, wherever they are. While it's good for users, the SirsteveHQ CDN has other advantages. Search engines love fast-loading sites so there’s an SEO benefit to having a CDN.

Our Free CDN

A CDN is essential if you want your business or side hustle to have an international market. The SirsteveHQ CDN offers the same edge caching features as paid CDNs from providers like Cloudflare. This has been included free only on our SirsteveHQ CP hosting packages.

While it has one-click activation, we give advanced users the option of development mode, and dynamic/custom cache settings: the freedom to experiment.

You can purge the cache in a click to make instant updates. Nuisance visitors can be blocked by IP address or country.

Stay on top of site performance and monitor for problems with our comprehensive CDN statistics. Users get raw data on SirsteveHQ CDN activity, presented in charts. So, you can make informed decisions on traffic trends and monitor for issues following site changes.

A Free CDN With A Global Reach
Fast loading websites anywhere

Our global network will edge-cache full pages close to where the user is based. It works with our StackCache WordPress module – no plugins required – as well as any other software that sets public cache control headers. So it works on any website.

The same network as the web giants

Our CDN makes use of the same internet exchange points (neutral data centres) used by AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure and many other leading tech companies. Whatever your business or project, you’ll get enterprise-level connectivity with the CDN.

Reliability and uptime

Improve reliability and uptime of your website, wherever your user is based. As your site is served from data centres close to them, there are fewer ‘hops’ in the network. The internet service provider only needs to route the user to our nearest POP, reducing the potential number of problems on the journey.

Supercharge Your Site With Our CDN
Automatic image resizing
Automatic image resizing

Slow-loading images are the bane of website performance. Our image CDN will scan your images and resize them for the appropriate size for mobile and desktop.

Image compression
Image compression

‘Raw’ images often contain information that can be removed or compressed without a visible loss in quality. The SirsteveHQ CDN will compress your images ‘on the fly’, saving you time.

Next-Gen image formats
Next-Gen image formats

Our image optimisation tools will convert files to fast-loading next-gen image formats like JPEG 2000, JPEG XR, and WebP.

Code minification
Code minification

We can minify and strip whitespace from our code. Our CDN will compress HTML, CSS and JavaScript files to reduce time spent parsing, compiling and executing it. Network payload is reduced, so sites load faster.

Lazy loading
Lazy loading

Only load what’s going to be presented to the user immediately: what’s going to be seen first. Your above-the-fold content will appear in a browser more quickly by deferring off-screen images or other non-critical resources.

Why Use The SirsteveHQ CDN?
User Experience

While a fast-loading site on desktop is important, mobile devices are the most common way to access the web. Mobile networks are slower, and phones are less powerful than desktops – so a site that’s fast on a desktop machine can crawl on a phone.

This can impact your bottom line: when page load time increases from 1 second to 5 seconds, the probability of a user abandoning your page rises by 90% (Google). People are impatient and unwilling to wait for a slow web page. Latency costs you money, so that’s where a CDN and Website Acceleration Suite can help.

The free SirsteveHQ CDN reduces latency through its edge caching and optimises your website content for snappy, responsive page loads.

SEO

Google’s messaging about site speed couldn’t be more clear: fast sites rank higher, and slow sites may receive a penalty. Site speed has become increasingly important to ranking on all search engines’ results pages.

A search engine wants to be popular. It can only achieve that by giving users results that satisfy them. If you click a link that doesn’t load quickly, you’re more likely to return to the search results and try an alternative. That alternative might be a competitor, and the search engine could rank that competitor higher next time. So you could lose ranking, as well as a sale.

Our CDN and website optimisation tools will help shave off those all-important seconds from load time - improving its SEO performance wherever your customers are in the world.

Data Costs

Some of us are lucky enough to live in locations where the cost of data is low. But it’s not the same everywhere. If your market is global you should consider this. In some places, a smartphone is the only portal to the internet for most people and data can be expensive.

Understandably, mobile users are reluctant to stay on sluggish, data-hungry websites. Our optimisations will help to make your site load quickly on slow networks and low-spec devices, keeping users engaged.

Data also has a cost to the environment: larger downloads and long-distance data transfers consume more energy and produce CO2. Reducing the payload of your website lessens its overall carbon footprint. So by using the SirsteveHQ CDN you can limit harm to the planet too.

Edge Caching

We automatically cache static content at our edge, ensuring rapid delivery of Images, JavaScript and CSS files to all your visitors around the world and you can control how long we store this content.

If you've updated your website and want to ensure all users are seeing the latest content before the cache expires, you can also run an instant Cache Purge. The more content you cache, the faster your website will load.

Our Dynamic Cache provides the ability to cache any resource at our edge by using public Cache-Control and Expires headers. Once enabled, you can start storing content in this cache by configuring your application to emit those headers. Any responses that contain a cookie will not be cached.

Combined with StackCache, this gives you full page dynamic content caching ensuring rapid TTFB times for all resources regardless of visitor location. Advanced users can check the output of the X-CDN-Cache-Status header to see whether a resource was cached.

Customise a number of Edge Caching options best for your site.

    • Image Cache - Set how long we should store images at our edge.
    • CSS Cache - Set how long we should store stylesheets and fonts at our edge.
    • JavaScript Cache - Set how long we should store JavaScript files at our edge.

At any time you can clear all cached files which will force all edge servers to fetch fresh copies from your site. Purging the cache may temporarily degrade performance for your website.

Why would I need to Purge?

If you have made changes to your site and you wanted to see the changes reflected immediately then you may need to purge the cache. However, our CDN will fetch your sites for you every hour to make sure the freshest content is served.

Manage Security Headers in order to control how your CDN can be accessed. These include X-Frame-Options, X-Content-Type-Options, Referrer-Policy, Strict-Transport-Security, X-XSS-Protection & Content-Security-Policy.

You can temporarily disable all caching to allow you to complete development tasks on the website without worrying about cached data. Caching is then automatically re-enabled after a period of 3 hours.

Block by IP address with Wildcards and CIDRs. For example, both 192.168.0.0/24 and 192.168.0.* would block all IP addresses between 192.168.0.0 and 192.168.0.255.

We essentially pay the premium to place hardware directly in "carrier hotels" and neutral datacentres that all traffic from a region will traverse through.
